Among their peers in the jazz world, guitarist Larry Koonse and string bass player Darek Oles are considered to be top-flight musicians and masters of their instruments. Based in Los Angeles, they have teamed up with other greats either on record or tours (Brad Mehldau, Pat Metheny, Joe Lovano, Charles Lloyd, Lee Konitz, Art Farmer, etc.) The duo brought out their own album Storybook in 2007, which offers compositions that are original (in both meanings of the word), that draw inspiration from the great masters of classical musical as well as various cultures from around the world, and that are centred on improvisation. Through their work, this duo displays a shared interest in lyricism, space and an intuitive capacity for communication. After having both played on four critically acclaimed albums with the Los Angeles Jazz Quartet, Larry and Darek now venture forward into new territory, bringing with them sense of musical daring and their strong bond of friendship, a signature of their performances together.
